When The Settlers was released on the Amiga in 1993 it was praised for melding the city building, god game and real-time strategy genres into something never seen before. Amiga User International wrote “The Settlers is an awesome piece of programming that could only have been achieved by creative talent of the highest order.” That creative talent was Volker Wertich who designed and programmed The Settlers. Today at Gamescon Ubisoft announced that an all-new version of The Settlers will be released on PC in 2020 and once again Wertich is at the helm.
The Settlers 2020 will feature new features and gameplay systems, procedural map generation and graphics created in Ubisoft’s Snowdrop engine. The game includes Campaign, Skirmish and Multiplayer modes with both PVE and PVP options.
Players can choose to follow one of three paths to victory. Combat is just what you expect; build an army to defeat your opponents on the battlefield. Glory involves creating a hero who can defeat champions from enemy factions in arena battles. Defeating an opponent’s hero increases dissatisfaction in their territory which makes the territory more vulnerable to conquest. Ubisoft has yet to reveal details about the Faith path other than that it involves inspiring settlers to follow you.
The Settlers will come in Standard ($59.99) and Gold ($99.99) Editions in the US. Gold includes the base game, three days of early access, and two in-game decorative items, the Gazebo of Tranquility and the Wishing Well.
Players in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Poland will have access to The Settler’s Entdecker Edition which contains the Gazebo of Tranquility, three lithographs and a soundtrack. A Collectors Edition will be available in Europe that includes the lithographs and soundtrack, the Gazebo of Tranquility and Wishing Well, an artbook, Flower Seeds and a letter from Volker Wertich. The Collector’s Edition will be limited to 5000 copies and come in a numbered collector’s box.
The new version of The Settlers can be pre-ordered now from the Ubisoft Store and the Epic Games Store. All preorders include an exclusive in-game Statue of the First Settlers.
